Vladimir Konstantinov was a tough-nosed defenseman, who played for the Red Wings from 1991-97.

Vladimir Konstantinov and his family, in conjunction with Gallery U & Boutique of Royal Oak, will present 42 of the former Red Wing’s works of art in a public exhibition November 17.

Nearly 14 years ago, the rugged defenseman was severely injured when a limousine carrying him, fellow teammate Viacheslav Fetisov and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov struck a tree at high speeds.

The tragic crash occurred just six days after the Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1997, shocking the Motor City and leaving Konstantinov struggling to regain his health and livelihood.

As part of his rehabilitation process, Konstantinov has recently teamed up with Universal Institute in Troy, a program that offers rehabilitation and living services for individuals affected by traumatic brain injuries.

Stemming from a successful sister model in New Jersey, Universal Institute operates Gallery U, an art gallery in downtown Royal Oak that solely features the art work of recovering clients.

Through Gallery U, the clients work with a highly-trained clinical team to create art through a variety of media, including paint, sculpture, photography and woodwork.

Much of the art is then displayed in the gallery, where patrons can purchase and even custom order pieces.

At the show, the gallery will predominantly feature Konstantinov’s signed and framed paintings, which visitors will be able to view and purchase.

Those who buy one of Konstantinov’s pieces will get an opportunity to meet the former Wing.

Proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, a non-profit organization that provides education, advocacy, research opportunities, and support groups to brain injury victims, their families and the people who assist them.

Konstantinov was drafted by the Wings in 1989 with fellow greats Sergei Fedorov and Nicklas Lidstrom. In his six seasons with the Wings, he played in 446 regular-season games and 82 playoff games, picking up 175 points before his career ended.

In the 1995-96 season, Konstantinov was an integral part of the organization’s race to its first championship in 42 years, leading the league with a +60-rating, and finishing second in Norris Trophy voting.

Konstantinov’s tough defense and hard hitting—atypical of the Russian style of play at that time—earned him on and off-ice nicknames such as “Vladinator” and “Vlad the Bad.”

His number has not officially been retired by the Red Wings but, out of respect, no player has worn it since.

The exhibition of Konstantinov’s work will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Gallery U, located at 310 West 4th Street in Royal Oak. Click here for more details about Gallery U and their work with Universal Institute.

Collaborative Art Hidden Behind Bloomfield Ave

Walking into Gallery U, Montclair’s contemporary art gallery on Glenridge Avenue, is an over-stimulating experience rife with unexpected familiarity. Most of the pieces set aside simplicity and adopt an entertaining complexity that causes the viewer to pause and enjoy. People come and go through the door, some buying paintings or sculptures, and some simply admiring the exhibit. A three-dimensional piece made of wire and wheels calls out for attention by the couches and CD player at the room’s far side. Cartoonish paintings of women with stinging neon green faces and violet hair provide a comic relief in the midst of the abstract surrounding artwork that have more existential undertones. Across the hallway is Universal Institute’s New Moon depicting countless moons over a dark blue space. It is easy to get lost in the detail of each piece, making it even easier to forget that there are still other rooms to view, including in the restroom.

Bethlehem business blends rehabilitation and art

A new art gallery in Bethlehem has paintings on the walls and handcrafted jewelry for sale. It also has exercise balls and a set of parallel bars.

The storefront at Third and Polk streets is both Universal Institute, a rehabilitation center, and Gallery U, an art gallery run by the rehabilitation center’s staff and clients.

"Art is the great equalizer," said Robert Greco, the company's executive director. "When you walk into the gallery, we have artists from all over the world. That artist is from Germany, and that artist is from Italy, and this artist has a traumatic brain injury and lives in Bethlehem. There’s no difference."

Universal Institute has provided rehab in Essex County, N.J., since 1989 and launched its first art gallery two years ago in Montclair, N.J.

Art therapy had long been a part of the company’s program, and the first Gallery U provided a place for clients to learn job skills, Greco said.

"Although it sounds really great in theory to hire someone with a disability, it’s really difficult to manage," Greco said.

Other Gallery U and Universal Institute locations are in Michigan and Red Bank, N.J., a well-known small-town art district like Montclair. Universal Institute felt Bethlehem fit that mold and provided an opportunity to expand into Pennsylvania, Greco said.

"It’s kind of what we look for — a cool vibe," he said.

Bethlehem is the only Universal Institute facility where rehabilitation is done at the art gallery. The local program is smaller than the others — currently there are five patients enrolled — and the space is larger than the other galleries, Greco said.

Patients live throughout the Lehigh Valley and come for both rehabilitation and to work at the gallery. Between physical, occupational and speech therapies, patients help run the gallery -- from inventory to publicity to shipping pieces, said Kara Francis, Universal Institute’s director of rehabilitation and community services.

"The gallery is a really unique opportunity for the clients who have that ability," said Francis, who works out of the Bethlehem location. "We want to reinforce them getting those skills."

Gallery U in Bethlehem is both a traditional art gallery and home to Universal Institute rehabilitation services.

The gallery also lets clients create art. Four of the Bethlehem gallery’s 35 current paintings were made by clients, as is much of the jewelry.

Former Bangor resident Angela Birk has a painting for sale at the gallery along with several necklaces she made. The 21-year-old, who was injured in a June 2009 car crash, said she especially likes the art component of the rehabilitation services.

"It keeps up my creativity," she said.

Universal Institute galleries also feature established artists' pieces, though none are priced more than $500, Francis said.

The rehabilitation services help subsidize the art galleries, but the more established galleries, such as the one in Montclair, do very well on their own, Francis said. Since June, Gallery U in Bethlehem has taken part in South Side Bethlehem’s First Friday events, which has made the community more aware of both gallery and company as a whole, she said.

Downtown Bethlehem Association Manager Samantha Schwartz said the association is glad to have the company as a member, both as another art gallery and unique business.

"It’s a very cool concept," she said. "Their artwork is so unique, and actually very good. … Being a studio art minor myself, I can understand how art is very healing."

Even clients without specific artistic ability participate in the center’s regular art therapy, Francis said. Its location allows staff to work with the clients in the neighborhood and take trips to the South Bethlehem Greenway and the Lehigh University farmers market.

"One of the huge factors with people who have injuries is socialization — they shouldn’t be isolated,” Francis said. “I just love the unique approach to your typical day program."

Gallery U: Art & Inspiration

Imagine this scenario… you are driving along one day just going about your daily routine. Seemingly out of nowhere, a car turns directly in front of you. There is nothing you can do. You have a mere second to try and hit your breaks before impact. Now what?
Hopefully you will never experience anything like this in your lifetime. Or if you do, the trauma will be minimal. However, for too many people, car crashes, falls and other accidents change their lives forever. They are left with scars, both physical and emotional that can take years, if ever, to heal. For many of these people, their injuries include head and brain trauma that keep them from ever living the life they knew before the accident. Until recently, there were very few places that these people could turn to for assistance. However, just a couple of years ago, that all changed in Michigan. Enter Gallery U.
What exactly is Gallery U? Gallery U is an art gallery located in downtown Royal Oak near the corner of 4^th and Washington. It is a brightly lit and inviting gallery that makes you feel good the minute you walk in the door. But more than that, Gallery U is a place of hope. Gallery U helps those people that have suffered from traumatic brain injuries.
In the early 1990’s, Universal Institute, Inc. started a workshop and a Gallery U in New Jersey for people that had suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The gallery allowed them to showcase pieces that they had created as well as to work and continue their recovery from their accident. Robert Greco, the Clinical Director, wanted to recreate what they had done in NJ here in Michigan. So, Universal searched around and found Therapeutic Rehabilitation Center in Livonia. They partnered up and started a workshop in Troy two years ago where 95% of the artwork is created. After finding the perfect location to display the work, the Royal Oak Gallery U was open for business at the Art, Beats & Eats Festival 2010.
Gallery U features paintings, drawings, woodworking, jewelry, soap, photography and more, all done by clients of Therapeutic Rehabilitation Center. Some of the clients come to work at Gallery U for a short time before they are able to return to their previous vocations. But often people with TBI’s are unable to return to their previous jobs. Gallery U provides for them the opportunity not only to display their creative side, but also to actually run the day-to-day workings of the gallery, developing other vocational skills as well.

As Susan Miller, Director of Marketing and Admissions for Universal Institute says, “These individuals have been through a horrible accident and their whole life has changed. There is a sense of hopelessness. Before this, there was no next level for them to blossom and come to their full potential. Now, with our help, they can go on to be a successful and productive citizen and truly can be happy.”
The purpose of Gallery U is to spread education and awareness of TBI’s to the community. For the clients, it is an integral part of their recovery. Ashley Cook, Vocational Rehab Tech, who oversees the clients, manages the art program and runs the gallery, feels that the uniqueness of Gallery U is one thing that sets them apart from other vocational rehab centers. “We deal with problem solving” she says. “The clients get to do things here that you would never see anywhere else”. It is this responsibility that allows the clients to build self esteem and higher level functioning skills that they normally may not be able to.
When speaking to Barb Hill, Vocational Director for Therapeutic Rehab Centers, she talked passionately about the clients they serve. “We provide a very natural environment” she said. “This is important because the clients don’t want to be labeled as only TBI. They like being able to say, ‘I work in an art gallery in Royal Oak’. It gives them a sense of self.”
Gallery U is open Monday thru Saturday from 12 pm – 5 pm. They also host monthly evening events, typically 6 pm – 9 pm that offer a variety of artworks matched to the nights’ theme as well as food and drinks. This is a chance for family, friends and the community to gather to see the amazing accomplishments the clients have achieved. Another important aspect of these events is that the clients handle all the preparation. From fliers to emailing to planning the menu and transportation, they do it all.
Gallery U is an inspirational place to visit. The sense of purpose to make a difference is felt in every aspect from the artwork to the people that you meet. Susan Miller puts it best; “We are here for one reason and that is to make people’s lives better”. Gallery U strives to accomplish this every day and they do a great job!

Local ROAR fundraiser focuses on work by photographers

Photographer and mixed media artist Erica Resnick of New Jersey is a featured artist at Gallery U during the Snap Judgment Photography Event, Feb. 24-27, in downtown Royal Oak.

“3 Stooges” and other works by Royal Oak photographer Ken Music will be on display at Vintner's Cellar as part of the Snap Judgment Photography Event and fundraiser for the Royal Oak Animal Shelter.

Plymouth photographer Brian Hill's letter art combines photos of recognizable images and letters to create words. His photos will be showcased at Ladybug Shoppe in Royal Oak.

Photography by local and national artists will be showcased in shops, salons and restaurants throughout downtown Royal Oak in the first annual Snap Judgment Photography Event, Feb. 24-27. Sponsored by the Royal Oak Association of Retailers (ROAR), the photo displays will also raise awareness and funds for the Royal Oak Animal Shelter. A VIP Preview, 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, will start out at the new Fifth Avenue where guests enjoy a drink and appetizers and then head out for an evening that's part “art walk” and part “poker run.” Each participating business will hand out playing cards, and guests with the best poker hands at the end of the night will win bottles of wine, gift certificates and other prizes.
“Any time during the evening people can go back to Fifth Avenue to turn their hand in. We'll have envelopes to collect the cards and we'll contact the winners,” said Linda Isrow, owner of Stella Boutique, who headed up the event's organizing committee.
The VIP Preview will also provide an opportunity to meet the artists. Photographer Ken Music won't have far to travel, as his Studio 326 is right across the street from Vintner's Cellar, the venue showcasing his work.
“Most of the things I'll show will be my own personal images rather than what I do for clients,” said Music who specializes in photos of cars and products for ad agencies and businesses.
One of Music's photos is a close-up of the tail fin of a ‘59 cherry-red Cadillac. A hand is seen gently buffing the chrome with a cloth. For Plymouth photographer Brian Hill, an image of a Corvette logo or a Mustang hubcap represent letters in his letter art photographs, which will be on display and are sold at Ladybug Craft and Frame Shoppe.
“He takes photographs of signs and things and puts them together to make a word,” said store owner Laura Harrison. “I've got one that says, ‘I love Royal Oak.' The ‘I' is from Oak City Grille. ‘Love' is a heart is from Shrine Church. The ‘R' is from the Royal Oak Music Theatre, and the ‘O' is from Memphis Smoke ... With each letter art piece you get the story of where he took the pictures.”
Local artist Jon Pickell's hand-colored black and white photos will be showcased at Lift Designer Toys & Gallery. And if you like small scale “photo-centric” art, check out the Art-O-Mat at Lift. The refurbished cigarette vending machine will be fully stocked with a variety of photo art for a mere $5 each.
Many participating businesses will offer discounts and surprises during the VIP Preview. At Gallery U, Hula Hooping experts will entertain, as visitors view works by Clawson photographer and jewelry artist Janna Bissett, and New Jersey mixed media photographer Erica Resnik.
“We're also going to feature photographs by most of our clients who work at the gallery,” said vocational rehab technician Ashley Cook, of the unique art space that shows work and is operated by people with traumatic brain injuries as part of their recovery and transition back into the community.
Tickets for the VIP Preview (21 and older) are available in advance at participating venues for $15, or $20 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Royal Oak Animal Shelter. BlackFinn, a participating photo venue, will host an additional fundraiser for the shelter, 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25. For a $5 donation guests will enjoy complimentary appetizers and drink specials.
The photography display is open to the public, and a second poker run, free to those 21 and older, takes place Saturday, Feb. 26. Just visit the venues displaying photographs (www.roarevents.info), pick up playing cards and turn them in at Fifth Avenue or at one of the participating businesses for a chance to win prizes.

Michael Alago - A legend in the music industry, Michael signed Metallica to Electra Records and has since worked with such iconic artists such as Nina Simone, Cyndi Lauper, Johnny Rotten and Rob Zombie. Michael is a published photographer and author/artist of the book Rough Gods.

Dan D. Client at Universal Institute and winner of most improved in the area of Physical Therapy. Dan was a featured reader at Art of Words.

Keith Caputo - front man for the legendary band Life of Agony, he also has a collection of solo work and has collaborated with industry heavyweights such as Flea (red Hot Chili Peppers), Craig Ross (Eric Clapton Band) and Martyn Lenoble (Jane's addiction. Keith has shared the stage with titans like Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails, Bjork, David Bowie, Pixies and Foo Fighters.

Robert Greco, Director of Gallery U and Executive Director of Universal Institute Rehab. Robert has worked at Universal since its inception in 1989. He is a published photographer and painter and has exhibited his work internationally.

Keith Caputo (Life of Agony) announces poetry reading at Montclair's Gallery U

Life of Agony lead singer Keith Caputo has announced a poetry reading from his new book Night Blooming Jasmine Will Never Smell The Same at Montclair's Gallery U. The reading will take place on Thursday December 2nd at 7pm. The new book is a collaboration between Caputo photographer Michael Alago. You can purchase the book at the reading or here. They are working on a second book entitled Today Is The Day which will be released next year. In other Life of Agony news, the band will be performing at the Best Buy Theatre on Thursday December 16th along with Biohazard and Vision of Disorder

Once again, Gallery U manages to pull off a magnificent show. "Cammanata" (Italian for walk) was the highlight of the Montclair Gallery Walk 2010. With hundreds of patrons in attendance throughout the night, Gallery Director, Robert Greco provided an important and eclectic display of fantastic emerging artwork. Cammanata, with classic disco pumping in the background, was a collection of artwork in motion. The highlighted piece "Inside of Emptiness" by first time gallery participant Nick Domanski set the stage for this multifarious collection.

UI Collective pieces, created by the clients of Universal Institute Rehab included a wonderful wall sculpture from recycled paper and featured cascading purple string, it was done with such careful balance and grace it really demonstrated the artistic talents of people with traumatic brain injuries.

Other notable pieces were Michael Alago's bold photograph of the back of a skinhead and Lynne Toye's dreaming landscapes. I loved the two little cityscape pieces by Inbred Hybrid Collective and the large black and white abstract photographs by Robert Langdon.

The most impressive pieces were the spray paint art of Joe Iurato who created portraits of musicians/artist Janis Joplin and Tom Waites. In his usual stencil style and created on wood, the flawless likeness surrounded the room and brought the other portrait pieces to life. In attendance were several members of the NJ State Council of the Arts, local real estate mogul Dick Grabowski, New York Gallerist, Marisol Klien, Contemporary Art Collector, Denise Clemens-Thouran and of course a selection of New Jersey's most interesting and illustrious.

Cammanata is a must see show, be sure to catch it before it 'walks' away.

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – (OCTOBER, 2010) – The Montclair Arts Council invites you to attend its bi-annual Gallery Walk, ‘A Little Night Art VIII’ on October 22, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. MAC invites you to join a tour of 7 participating galleries, 3 retailers exhibiting art, 6 restaurants offering Prix Fixe menus, 2 private museum tours and a gourmet chocolate tasting.

This extraordinary Gallery Walk will feature special works of art at Gallery U: Featuring "Camminata" or "to walk" a group exhibit with works by, Nick Domanski, Lynne Toye, Donna Marie Costanza, Inbred Hybred Collective, Robert Greco, Joe Iurato, Stan Sudol,

In addition to our wonderful commercial and nonprofit gallery partners, ‘A Little Night Art VIII’, is including 3 local retailers from Bloomfield Avenue: Edge Mid-Century Designs, Nye and Company and Semplice who will be also are exhibiting works of art.  Every venue will also offer something unique within their space – music, a visiting artist, or refreshments.

Free parking is available at the Montclair Art Museum at 3 Mountain Avenue, Senior Care at 110 Greenwood Avenue near Walnut Street and the Montclair Public Library on South Fullerton Avenue. The Art Shuttle buses will operate from 6pm to 9pm. They will leave from the Montclair Art Museum and Senior Care beginning at 6:00pm. The Montclair Patch is sponsoring the Art Bus as it makes continuous stops at all participating galleries.

Six Montclair restaurants including Richie Cecere’s Supper Club, Corso 98, Passionne, Palazzo, Bistro 18 and Market, will offer special prix fixe menus for patrons of the Gallery Walk.
